We're rarely speechless around here, but after bringing this blade down through a gorgeous piece of maple, it nearly happened. We knew that Forrest makes some of the best blades on the planet, but we truly weren't prepared for the gorgeous cut we got with this blade.

On the back side of plywood, we had zero tearout. When we cut a length of 8/4 oak, it felt like a hot knife through butter, and the result was too good to be believed: smooth as glass, completely free of circle marks of any kind, and it looked like it had been sanded already - cut after cut after cut.

You can pick up a miter saw blade for a tenth of this price, of course. It will cut. But it won't cut like this. And it won't last as long as this blade will, not by a long shot. Because it's made of double-hard C-4 carbide, it holds it edge for what seems like forever, and it resharpens beautifully.

10-Inch Blade and Operating Arm Power Through Thick Material
The 10-inch diameter blade and innovative design of the operating arm give the JMS-10SCMS tremendous cutting capacities throughout the dual bevel range. With the blade at zero degrees in both miter and bevel, the saw cuts material up to 3-5/8 inches thick and 12 inches wide. At a 45-degree miter, it handles material measuring 3-5/8 inches thick by eight inches wide. A pullout arm at the rear of the base helps stabilize the machine on a flat surface, and the circular center table surrounding the blade is precisely machined to be flat and flush with the table sections to either side. Why buy a compound miter saw? While a standard miter swings left or right at varying angles of the centerline, a compound miter also swings on a bevel, allowing you to cut a bevel and an angle simultaneously. This is invaluable if you are working on projects that require compound cuts, such as crown molding.As compound miters go, it's hard to do better than the Makita. At just over 36 pounds, this is among the lightest of the 12-inch miters, yet it doesn't feel flimsy at all. The swing arm is substantial, and I was able to make accurate cuts easily over and over again. The 4-1/2-inch fence is not as high as other models (fences for 12-inch saws typically average around 5 inches), but is perfectly fine for most applications.This is one quiet machine, which is great if you're going to be using it all day, and the horizontal, D-style handle is comfortable to use right- or left-handed (although, like most compound miters, the LS1221 bevels only in one direction).On the down-side, the miter and bevel scales are a little difficult to read compared to other models. But given the overall quality, portability, accuracy, and the sturdy construction, this is indeed a minor complaint.
